WHITWELL — A man kayaking with his family drowned Sunday afternoon on the Sequatchie River.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency reported Monday that 38-year-old Daniel J. Atkinson of Bell, Florida, was pulled under by strong currents at the base of the low head dam at Kenter’s Mill in Marion County.

The man, his wife and two children had gone to the Kenter’s Mill area to swim and kayak. The children had gone swimming while Atkinson’s wife had taken a kayak out to practice maneuvering. After she had returned to shore, Atkinson had taken the kayak out to share maneuvering techniques when he paddled to toward the dam. Witnesses told the TWRA the water from the dam had overturned the kayak.

Witnesses were able to pull the man to the shore and perform CPR until emergency medical services arrived. TWRA officers, the Whitwell Police Department and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene about 3:45 p.m.

Atkinson was taken to Park Ridge West Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Kenter’s Mill is northwest of Chattanooga near Prentice Cooper State Forest.
