And they responded using old-fashioned teamwork and the help of a certain video-sharing website.
Nurses and maintenance workers at Johnson City Medical Center noticed that a brood of ducklings had gotten stuck in a storm drain in the parking lot. After rescuing a few of the ducklings, hospital employees called the fire department for help.
Tim Conley said at first he and the other firefighters weren’t sure how to get the ducklings out of the drain, because they kept running away to different storm drain openings. After a few minutes of trying to coax the ducklings to one side of the drain and being unsuccessful, Conley said another firefighter had a better idea.
Instead of coaxing the ducklings to different places in the drain with a pipe, they ended up drawing them in by playing YouTube videos of mother duck sounds. About 45 minutes later, all nine ducklings were out of the drain and back in their nest nearby. Conley said the mother duck returned not long after.
“That’s the great thing about being a fireman, is you never know what you’re going to do that day,” Conley, who has been a firefighter for 16 years, said. “It’s nice to have something good like that with everybody working together.”
