ELIZABETHTON — A donkey will help St.Thomas Episcopal Church commemorate Palm Sunday in downtown Elizabethton.

In remembrance of the donkey that Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the first Palm Sunday, the congregation will follow the donkey as it makes its way from the church at 815 Second St. to the Elk Avenue Bridge at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Father Tim Holder of St. Thomas Church said the donkey chosen two lead the procession is a “beautiful creature” named Waffles. He said Waffles “is gentle and loves children and sugar candy.”

Holder said Waffles is also known as a “Jerusalem donkey,” which means he has a marking of a cross on his back.

Holder said everyone is invited to join the procession through “Old Town” Elizabethton to the bridge. He said palm fronds will be blessed and distributed.

Holder said Waffles may need a ride to the church. Anyone who would like to provide transportation may call Holder the church at 423-707-0042.
