ELIZABETHTON — One of the region’s most popular and biggest Christmas displays will take place this year on Saturday, Dec. 14, beginning at sunset.

This year marks the 41st Annual “Lights for Jesus” at Golf Course Acres, located next to the Elizabethton Golf Course on the west side of the city.

The display is well known for its display of 6,000 luminaries, which line the streets from West G Street to Armour Drive. Neighbors prepare the luminaries by placing a 10-hour votive candle candle in a white paper bag that has been filled with about 2 inches of white sand. The neighbors pitch in and help each other make the luminaries.

The story of the Golf Course Acres Christmas lights goes back more than 40 years, to the time when Becky Magill organized the Golf Course Acres Bible Club, with 30 children enrolled. The neighborhood children invited their friends from other neighborhoods to attend. The club’s project was to have a special event for Jesus.

The special event turned out to be the luminaries and it quickly grew into a big event. Now, 150 homes participate within a 10-block area. There are chairpersons for each area and the chairpersons work diligently to distribute the candles. The neighbors give a lot of time and effort to make this a special event for visitors.

The neighbors are asked to pray for God’s protection for the community, the nation and members of the the U.S. military and their families.

The luminaries will be lit from 5:30-11 p.m. Visitors enter the subdivision from West G onto Sabine Street, located directly behind Grindstaff Automotive.
