The Tennessee College of Applied Technology’s lease of the former Boones Creek Elementary School will be several more months in the making.

Washington County Director of Schools Bill Flanary told the Washington County Board of Education Thursday that lease negotiations have not moved forward, but that he is working with attorney Todd Bennett to come up with an agreement.

Noting the lease will also require state approval, Flanary warned board members the process will be slow, and said he hopes to have something for their approval by the end of the fiscal year.

Presenting a timeline for upcoming work on the next year’s school budget, BOE Financial Director Brad Hale said he will begin meeting with department heads throughout the school system on Monday.

Hale said over the next two weeks he will compile a list of the department’s funding needs from which he and Flanary will develop a master list to present to the board at its April 9 meeting.

Projected revenues will not be available until late April, after which Hale said a series of budget workshops and a called meeting will be necessary in order get a finalized school budget to the County Commission by late May.

On the request of school board member Phillip McLain, Hale agreed to ask the department heads to prioritize their funding needs so that allocations will go to where they are most needed. And on a similar request from Flanary, the board members agreed to communicate to the director what they want to see in the budget.

In other business, the board voted to:

• Allocate just over $25,000 for the purchase of a IT van

• Implement a previously approved sliding pay scale for school nurses based on the number of students at their schools at total annual cost of $26,000 starting next school year.

• Request two architect recommendations on how to correct deteriorating brick at Gray Elementary School suspected to be the cause of a heavy build up of moisture and the cause of the bricks’ failure.
