ETSU faculty member named editor of top-tier special education journal

Dawn Rowe, an associate professor in the Clemmer College at East Tennessee State University, has been named editor of “TEACHING Exceptional Children,” a top-tier, peer-review journal produced by the Council for Exceptional Children, which has over 30,000 members.

Rowe was chosen as editor following an extensive application and interview process. She joined the ETSU faculty this fall and holds an appointment in the Department of Educational Foundations and Special Education.

Published by SAGE Publishing, “TEACHIING Exceptional Children” presents research-to-practice content for special education teachers for immediate application. Articles and editorials focus on information and materials for the classroom, current issues in special education and training, instructional technologies, strategies, procedures and techniques for students with disabilities.

“Extensive research is taking place within the field of special education, but often there is a gap in how those findings are translated into practical applications for teachers,” Rowe said. “Our articles are geared specifically toward educators and provide tools and information to enhance the educational experience for their students.

“This journal is an important professional development opportunity for special education teachers.”

Rowe earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees at Appalachian State University. Before pursuing a doctorate degree, she served as a high school special education teacher and was also a compensatory education instructor who worked one-on-one with adults with varying disabilities to develop community living skills.

She earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina — Charlotte and was a faculty member at the University of Oregon before joining ETSU.

Her research has been published in a number of journals, including “Journal of Child and Family Studies,” “Career Development and Transition for Exceptional Children,” “Remedial and Special Education,” “Review of Educational Research,” “Journal of Disability Policy Studies” “American Journal of Sexuality Education,” “Vocational Evaluation and Career Professional Journal,” and “TEACHING Exceptional Children.”
