Johnson City Schools continue to 'expect the best'

“Expect the Best” is the motto of the Johnson City School System. According to the Johnson City Schools’ Annual Report, the system serves over 7,700 students in 11 different schools. Johnson City Schools employs over 1,200 people.

Currently, the Board of Education is working on a capital project that will create two middle schools for grades 5-8 out of Liberty Bell and Indian Trail Intermediate School, which is planned to be finished in three years.

Here is an overview of the school system:

• Cherokee Elementary

Indian Trail Intermediate School enrolled just over 1,200 students. The home of the Hawks offers a morning intramural program, community service projects, STEM, digital media and Educational Technology. Students can also be involved in the CLEAN club, an environmental group or ITIS News!, a taped news broadcast for the school.

• Liberty Bell Middle School

Principal: Donna Morgan

Assistant Principals: Charles Corwin, Jennifer Moore

Mascot: Patriots

Liberty Bell Middle School offers many different opportunities for student. STEM students in grades 7 and 8 can learn robotics through the VEX Robotic Design, Vocal music, orchestra, band, theater, Genius Hour, Exploring Tech, Service Learning and journalism are all classes taught at the school. The school also takes part in educational partnerships with Milligan College and East Tennessee State University. In the 2017-19 school year, the middle school enrolled 1,193 students.

• Science Hill High School

Principal: Todd Barnett

Assistant Principals: Carmen Bryant, Josh Carter, George Laoo, Jonathan Minton, Julie Decker, Melanie Riden-Bacon, Keith Turner.

Mascot: Hilltoppers

The Science Hill Class of 2018 completes over 46,000 community service hours collectively. The year saw many accomplishments including: All-State band, choir and orchestra programs, an award-winning speech competition group the SHowsTOPPERS, championship athletic teams and five National Merit Scholars. In the 2017-18 schools year, 2,227 student were enrolled in Science Hill High School.
