Two Washington County elementary schools will begin and dismiss classes 15 minutes later next year to keep students from waiting for buses home.

In an emailed letter sent Wednesday, Director of Schools Bill Flanary announced the changes at Grandview and Lamar elementary schools. Both will now start classes at 8:30 a.m. and dismiss at 3:30 p.m.

According to Flanary’s letter, the change came after consulting with the buildings’ principals and other district administrators.

Bus halls at Lamar and Grandview typically last 30 minutes on an average day while students and staff wait for buses to arrive from David Crockett High School and Jonesborough elementary and middle schools.

Flanary said he hopes the additional 15 minutes at the start and end of the day will decrease the time bused students wait, make more staff members available during the school day and increase adult supervision during bus hall.
