So many Washington County Schools faculty and staff members called in sick this week that the district canceled classes Friday.

The second district to close this week because of illnesses after Elizabethton City Schools’ closure Thursday and Friday, a message from Washington County Schools Special Projects Manager Dr. Jarrod Adams announced the schedule change at midday Thursday.

Adams said an increased number of employees were absent because they had influenza and flu-like symptoms.

The district’s custodial and food service staff will continue their sanitation efforts, particularly in areas otherwise occupied by students and staff during a normal school day, he said.
