Nandi to discuss supporting student success in ‘Women on Wednesdays’ talk

How can professors guide students to travel their own paths toward successful professions and meaningful careers? Engineering geologist Dr. Arpita Nandi will share her strategies for doing so in East Tennessee State University’s “Women on Wednesdays” Lecture Series on Feb. 6 at noon at the Reece Museum.

This free public lecture, “Paving a Path to Student Success,” is the first talk of the spring semester in the “Women on Wednesdays” series sponsored by the ETSU Women’s Studies Program.

Nandi strives to educate students through practical experiences and interdisciplinary learning by providing students with different hands-on opportunities. In her talk, she will highlight such approaches as offering research opportunities with faculty and encouraging students to present at conferences, visit local and regional field and office sites and join professional organizations. By instilling Nandi’s methods, professors in all disciplines can help their students identify their skills and abilities while guiding them toward rewarding careers.

Nandi says her primary objectives as a professor and scientist are to educate students who are able to explore the world and develop innovative solutions for environmental problems facing society, advance their career opportunities and further scientific knowledge.

Nandi is chair and undergraduate student coordinator in ETSU’s Department of Geosciences. She earned her Ph.D. in engineering geology at Kent State University and currently collaborates with the National Park and Forest services. She is a member of the Association of Engineering and Environmental Geosciences and a regular reviewer of numerous geological, hazard and geospatial journals.

The “Women on Wednesdays” series is designed to raise awareness about the research, scholarship and community engagement conducted by women at ETSU; to provide a venue where women on campus and in the community can discuss and support each other’s work; and to give students an opportunity to meet faculty who could become mentors for their studies.
