A Veterans Day Ceremony will be held on the campus of East Tennessee State University on Monday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m. to honor and remember those who have served their country through military service.

The event will take place at the Veterans Memorial in the Quad (behind Gilbreath Hall) and is open to the public. Organizers of the ceremony include ETSU’s Veterans Affairs Standing Committee, Office of Veterans Affairs, Student Veterans of America and Department of Military Science.

Members of the ETSU band and the University School chorus will provide patriotic music. In addition, the ETSU Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadets will conduct the Placement of the Wreath ceremony while taps is played.

Lt. Gen. Kathleen Gainey will offer remarks at the ceremony. Before retiring in 2013 with more than 35 years of service in the U.S. Army, Gainey was assigned deputy commander, U.S. Transportation Command, and led a major strategic review and period of increasing forces in Afghanistan and decreasing forces in Iraq.

She also served as director of logistics for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, where she steered a review of the dependency of contractors on the battlefield and established an Interagency Logistics Council.

Gainey, a 2004 Distinguished Alumna of Old Dominion University, received the National Defense Transportation Association’s Department of Defense Distinguished Service Award for 2011-13. She completed her M.B.A. at Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in Brooks Gym. Visitors may pick up a parking pass at Parking Services, located at 123 Stout Drive (at the University Parkway entrance to campus). For more information about the ceremony, contact Dr. Tom Donohoe of the Veterans Affairs Standing Committee at [email protected] or ETSU’s Department of Military Science at 423-439-4269.
