ERWIN — Unicoi County Schools will get a jump start on the new school year next week with two evenings of open house events to give students and their parents a chance to meet their new teachers and see their new classrooms before classes begin.

Director of Schools John English said the school system held the traditional start of school open house ahead of the first day of classes last school year and received such good feedback it decided to give everyone the same opportunity again this year.

Unicoi County High School and Unicoi County Middle School will hold their parent and student open houses from 5-7 p.m.Tuesday, Aug. 7. The event will be followed by open houses at all the county elementary schools on Thursday, Aug. 9, from 5-7 p.m.

Teachers will officially begin their new school year with four days of in-service training to get underway at 8 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 6, and run through Thursday Aug. 9. Instructional assistants will report at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, for one day of in-service training.

Students will return for their first half-day of school on Monday, Aug. 13, and their first full day of classes on Tuesday, Aug. 14.

On Monday, Aug. 13, middle and high school classes will begin at 7:45 a.m. and dismiss at 11:45 a.m. Elementary school classes will begin at 8 a.m and dismiss at noon.

Kindergarten students and students transferring into Unicoi County Schools may register at any time by calling their schools to make an appointment.

English thanked all the teachers who came in early to get their classrooms ready for next week’s open house events.

Like teachers everywhere, English said Unicoi County teachers often spend out of their own pockets to make sure their classrooms are well supplied and their students have all they need to get the new school year off to a good start.

He said those who wish to help supply a classroom or a student may call their schools for more information.
