Although 9,400 TNReady assessment test scores recently had to be rescored throughout the state, causing concern among parents, Johnson City school officials said their test scores were accurate.

“That didn’t affect us at all,” Collin Brooks, Johnson City Schools communication specialist, said.

The Johnson City Schools district was named an Exemplary School District by the Tennessee Department of Education Friday based on its high performance on the TNReady assessments, according to a press release from Johnson City Schools.

Fairmont Elementary and Towne Acres were two of just 59 schools across the state that earned Reward School status based on their academic performance, which is a designation given to the top five percent of schools with the highest success rates in Tennessee.

Johnson City Schools significantly outperformed the rest of the state in all achievement categories on the assessment. In grades 6-8 math, the system ranked first in East Tennessee. In grades 3-5 English and language arts and 3-5 math, the district ranked second in East Tennessee behind Maryville City. Grades 6-8 English and language arts and science, the district finished third in East Tennessee.

Though Superintendent Steve Barnett said there are still some “opportunities for continued growth,” the district was pleased to see that the test results remained accurate for Johnson City Schools.

“With our district receiving results of state standardized tests developed around more rigorous ELA and math standards, our scores represent some of the highest achievement gains in the state,” Barnett said in the press release. “By teaching to the more rigorous standards and getting students to apply knowledge, they will be ready for whatever the test may bring.”

Here’s how Johnson City Schools compared to state averages. These numbers represent the percentage of students who are “on track” or “mastery.”
