Three more Northeast Tennessee school systems have now shut down for a few days to combat the spread of illnesses.

Johnson City Schools will be closed Friday due to illness and Monday in honor of Presidents’ Day.

Classes will resume Tuesday.

Debra Bentley, the school system’s communication director, reported that while official attendance numbers would not be compiled until the afternoon, early trends this morning made it evident that closing Friday would be necessary.

She later reported that pupil attendance was at 89 percent systemwide. Teachers, too, had been affected by the illnesses, and the administration was having trouble finding enough substitute teachers to cover faculty absences.

Unicoi County Schools officials also announced they would shut down all schools Friday through Tuesday. Professional development originally scheduled for Friday will be rescheduled for the afternoon of March 10.

Carter County Schools also announced closing for Friday and Monday.

Schools in Washington County, Elizabethton and Kingsport were shuttered Thursday and Friday by widespread cases of the virus among students and staff.
