DiPietro made the announcement in an email to faculty, staff and students.
Cheek said he had been discussing the transition with DiPietro for several months. The chancellor turns 70 in September and said he had been "working too much and spending too little time with family."
He will remain in the chancellor's job until a replacement is found then will transition into a faculty position. He said the search for a new chancellor will begin "very soon."
