Teresa Bowman for Register of Deeds

Practical experience, not politics, is what Washington County needs in its next register of deeds.

Teresa Bowman has devoted 15 years to the register of deeds office, where she has developed practical experience as a clerk and bookkeeper.

The register of deeds is essentially a librarian — a person charged with receiving, filing, indexing and providing access to a collection of materials. In this case, that’s more than 100 different types of documents — anything required or allowed by law to be filed or recorded.

The list includes deeds, powers of attorney, mortgages, liens, contracts, plats and other documents. The office also provides public notice of property liens, contracts and other transactions.

As bookkeeper, Bowman must keep accurate records of fees, commissions and mortgage and transfer taxes. She came to the office from a loan officer’s position in the banking world — experience that serves her well in the real estate aspects of the job. As a clerk, she developed working knowledge of the office’s archival responsibilities.

Bowman already works within the statutes and regulations required for the position, so she would hit the ground running as the office’s leader.

Sound pretty practical to us.

We recommend a vote for Teresa Bowman as Washington County’s next register of deeds in Tuesday’s Republican primary.
