Police: Johnson City man held machete to grandmother, great-grandmother's throats

Machete assault charge: Police said a Johnson City man held a machete to the throats of his grandmother and great-grandmother Monday night as he threatened to kill both. Aaron K. Coggins, 24, 1308 E. Lynwood Circle, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault. Police were called to Coggins’ residence about 10 p.m. Police also reported that Coggins damaged furniture and a wall by swinging the machete. He was held in the Washington County Detention Center on $50,000 bond awaiting a Sessions Court appearance set for Tuesday.

Borrowed SUV: Johnson City police charged an Elizabethton woman Monday with stealing her former roommate’s SUV. Crystal Cozad, 47, 660 Jena Beth Drive, was charged with theft of property over $2,500. Police said the former roommate allowed Cozad to borrow the 2002 Chevy Trail Blazer and failed to return it during the allotted time. The vehicle was found Friday at an auto repair shop in Hampton. Cozad was held in the Detention Center on $1,500 bond awaiting a Sessions Court appearance set for Tuesday.

Fugitive from justice: A domestic disturbance early Sunday morning on McKinley Road led Johnson City police to arrest a woman wanted in Southwest Virginia. About 2 a.m., police went to 2823 McKinley Road and encountered Donna Alvarado, 29, who they learned was wanted on a warrant from Scott County, Virginia. Alvarado was charged with being a fugitive from justice. She was held without bond and arraigned Monday in Sessions Court.

Girlfriend reports assault at motel: A woman told police that her boyfriend choked her during an argument over money at a Johnson City motel last week, leading to the man’s arrest. Bruce Wright, 61, 200 S. Boone St., was charged Thursday with aggravated assault. About 11:20 p.m. Nov. 19, police investigated the alleged assault at the Park N’ Stay, 3406 W. Market St. Wright had left before they arrived. The woman was treated at the scene by Washington County/Johnson City Emergency Medical Services. Wright was jailed on $20,000 bond and arraigned Friday in Sessions Court.

Shots fired: Police are seeking the public’s help after shots were reported Friday night near East Tennessee State University. About 6 p.m., police were called to 902 Ashley Road on a report of an armed robbery. The victims and neighbors reported hearing three to four gunshots in the area. Police said no significant injuries were reported.
