Last night, The Jonas Brothers, my first boy band love, released their first single since the band’s split in 2013 in a huge way. In one night, the band confirmed they were reuniting, then at midnight dropped a single that had every girl in their mid-twenties — including this one — absolutely screaming.
The new song, “Sucker,” in my opinion, combines the sounds we’ve been hearing from the two working brothers, Joe and Nick.
Since they broke up (as much as a group of brothers can) the eldest Kevin has been just living his life away from the spotlight with his incredibly beautiful wife, Danielle. But for the obsessive fans, we’ve had a steady stream of music from the two youngest, Nick and Joe.
Nick released his first solo album pretty quickly after the band quit, took a break, then made a comeback in 2015 with a more mature, pop solo album, “Nick Jonas X2.” This is the album with some of his most recognizable hits like, “Chains” and “Jealous.” He also released “Last Year Was Complicated” in 2016 with “Close” with Tove Lo, a song that played endlessly on pop stations for months.
Meanwhile, Joe was out dating supermodels like Gigi Hadid and making music in a group called DNCE. The song that brought them mainstream you may recognize is, “Cake By The Ocean.” Their music has catchy, dance/rock vibes with unique lyrics.
The new Jonas Brothers are pretty different from what we all remember when we listened to every album, clutching our Tiger Beat magazines that came with full-size posters to hang on our walls. They’re older wiser and—and to everyone’s dismay—married. (or engaged.) But who can be upset about that when they watch the video the group dropped that features all of the brothers’ significant others? Kevin’s wife Danielle Jonas, Nick’s wife Priyanka Chopra and Joe’s Fiancee, Sophie Turner (of “Game of Thrones” fame) were all featured in the group’s colorful, fantastical music video.
It’s new, it’s exciting and honestly, I am so, so here for it. I can’t wait for that they announce next.
Now look out, music industry. The Jonas Brothers are back, they’re in strong, healthy relationships and have done some growing up. We’re all older, wiser and more than ready for the comeback of the century.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a playlist that only has two Jonas Brothers songs on it, “Sucker” and “Lovebug” and I’m playing it on repeat until they release an album.
