Warm hearts signing up to brave the cold for local families in need

Good Samaritan Ministries, The Wellness Center, Harmon Ice and Ballad Health have struck up a cool partnership to help the at-risk community in the depth of winter.

And they put out a challenge to anyone hearty enough to take an icy plunge aptly dubbed, “Freezin’ For A Reason.”

To help the ministry fulfill its mission to the help area’s homeless and poor, a benefit dip into The Wellness Center’s ice cold pool has been scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 1.

For those in need of the ministry’s assistance with a pending eviction notice, utility disconnections, food, clothing or other social services, Ministry Director Aaron Murphy said Freezin’ For A Reason is much more than a daring dip in cold water.

And to help neighbors who are at risk of literally being left in the cold, the ministry is in search of strong-hearted “plungers” willing to raise funds and show their true strength with a wild winter leap into an icy pool.

For those who dare to accept the challenge, step one is to step up, face the cold and help a cause that’s worth freezing for by registering online at goodsamjc.org/freezin’.

And you don’t have to do it alone. The plunge will be more fun and the benefit will multiply if you grab you best buds, family members, co-workers and teammates and form a Polar Team, get creative, throw together costumes and take the plunge together.

Plungers are encouraged to set their fundraising goals high and work to blow those goals out of the water in order to help local families in need.

Those too chicken to take the plunge can still make a splash by joining fundraising as a “Too Chicken Plunger” and coming out to watch the Feb. 1 event from a spot on dry land.

Too Chicken Plungers are also encouraged to register or to make a one time donation at the website. Trophies will be awarded for the most money raised.

More information about the event is available at the website or may be obtained by calling Good Samaritan Ministries at 423-928-0288.

Donations earmarked for Freezin’ For A Reason may also be made by mail to Good Samaritan Ministries, P.O. Box 2441, Johnson City, TN 37605.
