“As you are aware from prior updates, Clio Holdings is working to unwind the consolidation and generate money to pay employees and creditors,” Clio Holdings, a holding company that owned both U.S. Marble and Premier Surfaces, told employees in an email at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday. “At this time Clio is unable to fund payroll and accrued PTO that is due tomorrow. We will update you if this changes.”
The message was sent from Brian Crane, who has a LinkedIn profile that lists him as the corporate controller at Clio Holdings. Crane and U.S. Marble did not respond to a request for comment from the Press.
“How can a million dollar company not be able to pay the people that worked hard to make sure the job got done?” Jose Rivera, a former U.S. Marble employee, said in an email to the Press.
Clio Holdings said in a Jan. 3 message to employees that accrued payroll would be processed and issued on the normal cycle. The holding company said in the same message on Jan. 3 that it would be shutting down operations at two of its companies, U.S. Marble and Premier Surface, at 1:30 p.m. that day. Employee health insurance has also been terminated.
Chris Cannon, a spokesman for the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development, said Friday the agency has not heard anything from U.S. Marble. If 50 or more employees are impacted by a facility closure, Cannon said companies are required by the state’s WARN Act to file a notification with the department 60 days before that closure.
The company’s LinkedIn page says U.S. Marble, which has a primary location in Remus, Michigan, employs between 201 and 500 people. The Press was unable to confirm Friday how many people worked at the U.S. Marble site in Johnson City, although local officials estimated it could have been roughly 20.
Resources are available to impacted employees through several local American Job Centers, which in Johnson City is located at 2515 Wesley St.
Brian Decker, the team leader at the Johnson City American Job Center, said the facility has services available to anyone who needs career guidance.
Employees at the center can offer individual assistance with job searches, and the center also holds workshops on interviewing and resumes. The center also has partners at the facility who can assist with applying for or finding funding for education and training.
In the center’s resource room, which offers access to computers, a printer and a fax machine, visitors can file an unemployment insurance claim, search for jobs or print out resumes. Decker said the center has a staff person in the resource room all day to assist people. He said the center in Johnson City has so far helped at least one former U.S. Marble employee.
