Sears yesterday announced that the retailer is planning to close its location at The Mall at Johnson City. The department store is expected to close in January 2020.

Prior to the Sears closing announcement, Washington Prime Group, the owner of The Mall at Johnson City, executed an agreement to gain control of the Sears anchor space for future redevelopment. The company plans to make an announcement in the near future regarding exciting redevelopment efforts at The Mall at Johnson City, which are expected to kick off in 2020.

The company is committed to reinvesting in The Mall at Johnson City and maintaining its longstanding presence as the gathering place to shop, play, eat and drink in the Tri-Cities.

After the Sears stores in Kingsport and Bristol closed in 2017, the Sears in Johnson City is the last of its kind in the Tri-Cities.
