Downtown Johnson City is losing another brick-and-mortar retailer.

Overmountain Outdoors, a native outdoor products retailer located at 106 Tipton St., announced in a lengthy March 14 Facebook post that it would be closing its store this month. The post did not specify an exact date.

“We'd like announce Overmountain Outdoors has made the decision to close March, 2019. We have enjoyed and appreciate all our loyal customers who have patronized the shop over the past four years and participated in events or supported us in any way,” the Facebook post stated.

“We have met many fantastic people and have shared many great conversations through this venture. We will continue to treasure those memories but have decided to explore other trails and let our life's adventure take us in another direction. We hope that you will continue to enjoy the great outdoors that our region has to offer, and you will still be able to find us in the mountains.”

The business, owned by Matt Whitson, had just relocated to its Tipton Street location in June 2018. The store originally opened at 142 W. Market St., in October 2016.

Several followers of the business commented how sad they were to see Overmountain Outdoors close. The business responded to each and every comment by thanking for the support.

“Nooooooooo!!! I’m so sorry, friends. You will be greatly missed,” Johnson City Brewing co-owner Kat Latham commented.

The store offered clothing, footwear, technology and accessories designed for outdoor activities.

“More details to follow on discounts and pricing and final closing date,” the store’s social media post said. “We will be selling inventory and fixtures as we prepare to close.”

On Thursday, the store made another social media post letting its followers know the building at 106 Tipton St. is for sale or lease.
