The Appalachian Resource Conservation and Development Council was awarded first place in the Excellence in Environmental Support category at Thursday’s Johnson City Chamber of Commerce’s Regional Business Excellence Awards Ceremony.

Appalachian RC&D Executive Director Susan McKinney accepted the award alongside Board Chairman Roy Settle.

The Excellence in Environmental Support Award is given to an organization that demonstrates progress in being a steward of the environment.

The Appalachian RC&D has been involved in a variety of environmental projects, including land conservation through the Lands of Boone and Crockett Land Trust, stream-bed restoration, and wildfire mitigation and restoration after the 2016 wildfires in Gatlinburg.

“Environmental protection is embedded in the core mission of Appalachian RC&D, and is part of the work they do every single day,” a press release from the Appalachian RC&D stated.

“They work passionately to protect the beauty of Northeast Tennessee while fostering economic growth through educating beginning farmers and ranchers. Appalachian RC&D is proud to have been recognized for their work, and is grateful for the support they receive from local sponsors, partners, donors, as well as the grant funding they receive from the USDA and TDA.”
