Between Black Friday’s battle royale and the reclusive Cyber Monday is the friendly neighborhood Small Business Saturday.

The national movement urges people to take a break from the big box stores and the ubiquitous online retailers and show some love to the shops right around the corner.

A number of merchants in Johnson City will take part, including Mojo Skateboard Shop, Sabores, Reclaimed Inspired Goods, the Willow Tree Coffehouse and Music Room, Skillsville, Bernina in Stitches, the Atlantic Ale House, JRH Brewing, Dos Gatos Coffee Bar, Cakebuds Bakery, Downtown Yoga Center, Local Motion Cyclery, Fleet Feet and many more.

Many of the stores are offering special deals for Saturday shoppers. For more information, visit the Downtown Johnson City Small Business Saturday Event on Facebook.

In addition to shopping small, Jonesborough, Erwin and Unicoi are holding events with fun activities for the family.

The Erwin Christmas parade starts at 10 a.m. on North Main Avenue downtown, and will be followed by Small Business Saturday events, including free gift wrapping at the Chamber of Commerce office for any present purchased in Unicoi County.

In Unicoi, the Christmas parade starts at 2 p.m., and will begin at the Unicoi Funeral Home on Unicoi Drive and continue to Unicoi Elementary School. Local businesses and restaurants will also offer sales and giveaways.

In Jonesborough, local businesses will be open for extended shopping hours from 10 a.m to 8 p.m.

Christmas events start in the state’s oldest town with Whoville from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Grinch and other characters from the classic Christmas story by Dr. Seuss will be present. At 6 p.m., the town’s ceremonial Christmas tree lighting will take place.
