Rick Thomason has been named publisher of the Johnson City Press, Sandusky Newspaper Group President Doug Phares announced Tuesday.

Thomason joined the group in November 2016 to lead the Kingsport Times News, where he also will continue as publisher.

Prior to his arrival in Northeast Tennessee, Thomason worked at newspapers in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, Georgia and Connecticut in his 39 years in the newspaper business. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Auburn University and is a graduate of the News Management Center at Northwestern University.

“These are exciting times in Johnson City and throughout the region as our cities and counties begin a more collaborative approach to growth,” Thomason said. “The Johnson City Press will continue to play an important role in community conversations that impact neighborhoods on the most local scale and cities and counties on the regional scale.

“The Press — along with the Times News and our weekly products — tells the stories of this place and the people who make it special like no other media outlet. And our products deliver a valuable advertising vehicle that is invited into homes on a daily basis. But we have room to grow just as the region has room to grow. And we will.”

Thomason will lead SNG’s Northeast Tennessee Media Group, which includes the two daily newspapers and the weekly newspapers Herald & Tribune in Jonesborough, The Tomahawk in Mountain City and The Erwin Record. Thomason may be reached at [email protected].
