Blue Moon Rising: Dinner theater to return to downtown Johnson City

It’s been more than two years, but the Blue Moon Theatre Company is returning to downtown Johnson City with a new, original murder mystery comedy show.

The theater will return with “Things Stranger,” a spoof of the Netflix series “Stranger Things,” which gained popularity when it aired on the streaming service in 2016. Ed Breese, who owns the theater with his family , has been spending about a year writing the new play, and auditions for the return show will be Sept. 18 and 19 at 7 p.m. at the theater, 225 E Main St.

The show will run Oct. 27 and 28 and Nov. 3 and 4 to herald the return of the theater to the downtown scene. While the play is a spoof of the Netflix show, Breese said audience members don’t have to be familiar with “Stranger Things” to enjoy the play.

The building has been for sale since the family decided to close its doors in February 2015 to deal with health concerns. The building remained for sale, Breese’s health improved, and he began writing “Things Stranger” and planning beyond.

“We sort of came together as a family, it’s something we loved so we’re excited to be back,” Breese said. “We’ve gotten some really nice responses welcoming us back. I don’t have the words to describe it.”

In addition to new, original work, the building has been freshened up to welcome audiences back into its doors. Breese said that he plans to offer the theater for private parties and looks to pair with all the new, different businesses that have popped up downtown since the last time the theater was open. With a handful of different restaurants, Breese said he is excited to be jumping back in to the downtown scene.

“Coming back after being closed for two years, so much has happened, and we can’t wait to be a part of that mix,” Breese said.

Blue Moon is seeking actors 18 years and older to fill these roles:

• Evelyn - Female - Strong, quiet type. Must be good a facial expressions and body language.

• Bopper - Male - 30s plus- Town Sheriff. Enjoys beer and a good mystery. Gruff.

• Justin - Male - A Dungeons and Dragons-loving guy who just wants his two front teeth for Christmas (and maybe a new BMX)

• Joyce - Female 30 plus - A nervous Mom who is not above using unusual methods to find her missing son. Experience with Christmas lights preferred but not required.

• Company CEO - (Male or Female) - Corporate type. In charge of any situation.

• Director - Male (could be cast as female) - A 1980s inspired movie director. Serious about his work.

• Barb - An informative problem solver. Always a third wheel, but a crowd favorite.
