Cloudland beats Cosby in 1-A semis, sets up rematch with North Greene

MORRISTOWN — Cloudland ended the first half on a 12-3 run and never trailed in the second half to down Cosby 47-28 in Monday’s Region 1-A girls basketball semifinal at Walters State Community College.

Jasmine Birchfield paced the Lady Highlanders with 13 points and Kenzie Birchfield was right behind with a dozen, all on shots from 3-point range. Showing balance, Mandy Benfield scored eight and Gracie Freeman had seven as Cloudland (25-5) advanced to Wednesday’s championship game and Saturday’s sectional round.

Leia Groat was the leading scorer for the Lady Eagles (21-13) with eight points.

North Greene 62, Unaka 41

Haleigh Bernard scored 17 points to lead four Lady Huskies (26-8) in double figures in the first Region 1-A semifinal. Five of her shots were from 3-point range as North Greene hit 11 shots behind the arc overall.

Emily Britton had 12 points, followed by Shelby Davenport with 11, Brooklyn Anderson with 10 and Breezy Savage with nine.

For the Rangers (13-21), Lyndie Ramsey capped off an outstanding freshman season with 23 points. Jada Whitehead was the next highest scorer with seven.


The win sets up a fourth meeting of the season between North Greene and Cloudland in Wednesday’s Region 1-A championship game, which has been moved to Daniel Boone High School.

Each team won on the other’s home court, while the Lady Huskies nipped the Lady Highlanders 63-60 last week in at  to win the District 1-A championship at Daniel Boone.
