Dobyns-Bennett sweeps Jefferson County on Douglass night

KINGSPORT — Brady Stump hit a game-winning 3-point goal with three seconds to go to lift Dobyns-Bennett to a 59-57 win over Jefferson County Saturday on a night honoring Kingsport Douglass High School.

Wearing replica jerseys of the former African-American school, the Indians were nicknamed the Tigers for the evening. Freshman Jonavan Gillespie scored 13 points to lead the Tigers, while fellow freshman Stump had 10.

Junior Zane Whitson grabbed a key offensive rebound off a missed free throw and had the winning assist. Whitson also scored 10 points, while Malachi Hale and Jack Browder each scored eight.

Noah Bowman led Jefferson County with 11 points and Jacob Thompson scored nine.

Tennessee High 63, Virginia High 58

BRISTOL, Va. — Cole McBrayer hit five shots from 3-point range to score 18 points and lead the Vikings to a win over their crosstown rival Bearcats.

Called the Bristol City Classic as a tribute to the former African-American schools, Tennessee High wore black and orange Slater uniforms and Virginia High wore yellow Bristol Douglass uniforms.

Blake Fauver had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Tennessee High, while Nolan Wishon also had a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Gavin Austin had half of Virginia High’s points with 29. Isaac Simcox finished with 12 points.

Chuckey-Doak 58, Happy Valley 54

AFTON — Alex Maupin scored 23 points as the Black Knights rallied to beat the Warriors. Tyler Ramsey had 12 points in the Chuckey-Doak victory.

Blake Young scored 19 points to lead Happy Valley. James Harmon finished with 14 for the Warriors and Dylan Willis added 11.

GIRLS

Dobyns-Bennett 34, Jefferson County 33

KINGSPORT — Megan Ayers hit a game-winning free throw with 15.9 seconds left to lift the “Tigerettes” to the win over the Lady Patriots.

Ayers had a game-high 12 points to lead Dobyns-Bennett, which got eight from Jabrea Johnson.

Alexa Gramman scored 11 for the Lady Patriots, who won the first meeting between the teams.

Happy Valley 45, Chuckey-Doak 40

AFTON — Gabby Wood totaled 12 points as the Lady Warriors earned the road win against the Lady Knights.

Olivia Absher and Jaiden Clark each scored 10 for Happy Valley. Emily Lunceford contributed eight points to the win.

Chuckey-Doak was led by Sierra Jaynes with 17 points. Earendia Davis added 13 points.

Virginia High 49, Tennessee High 23

BRISTOL, Va. — Maria Wilson posted a 17-point effort to lead the Lady Bearcats over the Lady Vikings.

Kenzie Nickels had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead Tennessee High. Tori Ryan grabbed 12 rebounds.
