ERWIN—Unicoi County had a chance, but Sullivan East left Erwin with a 42-41 Three Rivers Conference boys basketball victory on Friday night.

Earlier, in the girls contest, Sullivan East was a 61-41 winner over the Lady Blue Devils.

Dylan Bartley did his part for the Patriots with a game-high 21 points. His free throws late extended the Sullivan East (13-12, 6-3) lead, but Unicoi County (13-12, 4-5) had an opportunity. The Blue Devils had a shot inside as time was running out. The rebound was picked up by Lucas Slagle, who called a timeout with 0.2 on the clock. Time was adjusted to 0.4, giving Brett Lingerfelt time for a last-chance heave — from 25 feet away — that fell astray.

Lingerfelt helped shoot the Blue Devils back into the game with clutch 3-pointers, four in all for a team-best 12 points.

Bartley went 9 of 14 at the free-throw line as the rest of the team finished just 0-for-2. His 11 points in the second quarter helped Sullivan East take a 23-21 lead to halftime after trailing by seven at the end of a quarter.

Slagle added nine points for the Blue Devils, but was 3 of 10 at the free-throw line — where Unicoi went 7 of 18.

Mason Montgomery added nine points for Sullivan East.

Before the boys contest, Sullivan East head coach John Dyer was recognized by Unicoi County athletic director Michael Smith and Unicoi County Director of Schools John English with a painting of Sullivan East’s Dyer Dome as Friday marked Dyer’s last trip to Erwin.

A one-point game at halftime quickly turned in favor of Sullivan East (17-9, 7-2) in the second half. The Lady Patriots pulled away late thanks to free throws for the league win.

Hayley Grubb scored 10 of her game-best 21 points in the second half as she was a near-perfect 6 of 7 at the free-throw line for the winning side. Jenna Hare finished with 14 points while Riley Nelson added 10.

Ashtan Vance led Unicoi County (13-10, 3-6) with 14 as she scored seven points in each the second and third quarters. Her scoring outburst in the second quarter helped Unicoi overcome a 17-8 deficit after a quarter as the end of first half was a back-and-forth affair.

The Lady Blue Devils’ Tenley Holt knocked down three 3-pointers for her nine points.

Sullivan East went 11 of 18 at the charity stripe in the fourth quarter to extend the lead.

Both Sullivan East and Unicoi County travel for conference games Tuesday. Sullivan East goes to Johnson County while Unicoi County has a trip to Elizabethton.
