Unaka downs University High for first league win

ELIZABETHTON — Will Sexton scored 20 points as Unaka defeated University High 53-50 on Tuesday night for its first Watauga Valley Conference basketball win of the season at Snavely Gym.

Dylan Whitehead contributed a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds to the victory. Devin Ramsey had seven timely points.

Marshall Fleenor led University High’s efforts with 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Kaleb Meredith also finished with 14 points, followed by Mason Broome with 12 points.

Sullivan Central 80, Johnson County 68

MOUNTAIN CITY — The Cougars rallied from a 16-point, second-quarter deficit for a 28-point turnaround.

Sullivan Central had six players in double figures led by Joltin Harrsion’s 16 points with a dozen coming from 3-point range. Ethan Lane tallied 14 points, while Bryson Crabtree and Jacob Fields each scored 12. Ty Barb and Preston Sams each scored 11.

Johnson County was led by Lucas Phillips with 24 points, including four shots behind the arc. Michael Oxentine and Clayton Cross each scored 13.

North Greene 68, Cloudland 63

BAILEYTON — Hunter and Hayden Shell combined for 35 points, but the Highlanders’ fourth-quarter rally came up short against the Huskies.

Hunter Shell had 19 points with four shots from 3-point range. Hayden Shell also hit four behind the 3-point line to end with 16 points. Conner Birchfield and Elijah Blair each scored 12.

Shane Cooter towed in 14 points for North Greene, which led 49-31 after three quarters. Kendal Loftis scored 10, while Chance Campbell and Cayden Foulks each finished with nine.

Dobyns-Bennett 81, Volunteer 60

KINGSPORT — Abiah Releford hauled in 15 points to lead the Indians in the Big Seven Conference victory over the Falcons.

Malachi Hale was right behind with 14 points, followed by Jack Browder with 13 points and McKinley Tincher with 10.

Volunteer was led by Garrison Barrett with 12 points. Dakota Hicks hit double figures with 10.



Unaka 62, University High 31

ELIZABETHTON —Freshman guard Lyndie Ramsey scored 19 points as the Lady Rangers doubled up the Lady Bucs. Kiki Forney hit three shots from 3-point range to add nine points for Unaka.

Delaney Trosin paced University High with 10 points. Katy Stancil finished with nine points.

Sullivan Central 57, Johnson County 45

MOUNTAIN CITY — Abbey Crawford dominated inside, scoring 22 points to lead the Class AA No. 6-ranked Lady Cougars to the hard-fought win over the Lady Longhorns.

Macy McClellan added 15 points in the Central victory.

Taylor Parsons led Johnson County’s efforts with 13 points. Sadie Stout scored 12 points and Taylor Cox netted nine. The Lady Longhorns were 0 for 13 from 3-point range.

Cloudland 55, North Greene 51

BAILEYTON — In a showdown of top-10 ranked teams, the No. 9-ranked Lady Highlanders got the best of the No. 7-ranked Lady Huskies.

Mandy Benfield led Cloudland in the big road victory with 17 points. Jasmine Birchfield and Gracie Freeman each scored a dozen, while Leah Birchfield ended with eight.

Hayleigh Bernard had 14 first-half points and 20 overall to lead North Greene. Brooklyn Anderson totaled 11 points and Breezy Savage scored eight.

Dobyns-Bennett 64, Volunteer 24

KINGSPORT — Megan Ayers shot it particularly well for the Tribe (18-7, 7-1), knocking down six 3-point shots and scoring a game-high 20 points. Teammate Elle Francis made three 3-pointers herself, finishing with 13 points. Caitlyn Wallace finished with nine points.

The Lady Falcons (12-11, 3-5) got a seven-point game from Audrey Evans and six points each from Atlee Dean and Kenady Knittel.

D-B led 14-9 after one quarter and 33-11 at halftime.
