Layne scores 28 as Rebels surge late to down Longhorns

MOUNTAIN CITY — Sullivan South pulled away late from Johnson County to stay unbeaten in the Three Rivers Conference boys’ basketball standings.

Up by seven with five minutes to go, the Rebels raced to a 77-63 win at Shoun Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

Cole Layne led the Rebels charge with 28 points. Ben Diamond poured in 15 more points and Nick Ellege finished with 13 points.

Michael Oxentine had a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Longhorns. Johnson County led most of the first half before South rallied to tie the game at 43 at the break.

Lucas Phillips produced an 18-point effort for the Longhorns and Clayton Cross ended with 13 points.

Tennessee High 63, Dobyns-Bennett 59

BRISTOL — The Vikings rallied from a 17-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter to upend the Indians.

Nolan Wishon led the way as the 6-foot-7 post had 21 points. McHale Bright contributed 13 points in the Tennessee High victory, while Cole McBrayer finished with 12 points and Blake Fauver added 11.

Abiah Releford paced Dobyns-Bennett with 15 points. Brady Stump and Jack Browder each scored 11. Jahson Dennis totaled nine points and Zane Whitson ended with eight.

Sullivan North 65, Providence Academy 25

KINGSPORT — The Golden Raiders jumped out to a 33-11 halftime lead and kept pulling away in the second half to defeat the Knights.

Trey Williams led the North attack with 16 points. Isaiah Pruitt and Christian Hill each scored 14 points.

Caleb Zepeda led Providence with seven points.

North Greene 64, Cloudland 50

ROAN MOUNTAIN — Kendal Loftis scored 17 points as the Huskies took the road win over the Highlanders.

Turner Bailey had 11 third-quarter points to finish with 15 points and Carson Whaley added 11 points for North Grenee.

Bentley Gilbert led the home team with 13 points and Hunter Shell finished with 12. Hayden Shell added eight for Cloudland.

Hampton 54, South Greene 43

GREENEVILLE — The Bulldogs outscored the Rebels 18-8 in the final quarter to pull out the tough road win.

Jordan Bentley led Hampton with 18 points, while Rocky Croy finished with 12 points and six steals. Conor Jones and Izaak Hill each scored eight points and Morgan Lyons pulled down eight rebounds.

Hunter Hartman had 12 points to lead South Greene. Chase Carter and Preston Bailey each finished with eight points.

Tri-Cities Christian 92, Bethel Christian, N.C. 79

SPRUCE PINE, N.C. — Adam Pigeon and Drew Correll did their best James Harden impressions, racking up big numbers in three categories, while Gavyn Etter imitated the Houston Rockets star by knocking down five 3-pointers in a 27-point effort.

Pigeon finished with 22 points, 13 rebounds and six steals. Correll posted 20 points, 12 rebounds and five assists for the Eagles, now 12-5 on the season.

Cameron Skinner harvested a 25-point outing to lead the Crusaders. Lochlin Vance was next with 23 points, while Michael Robertson scored 13 points.

GIRLS

Johnson County 51, Sullivan South 47

MOUNTAIN CITY — Taylor Cox scored 18 points and Sadie Stout totaled 15 as the Lady Longhorns held on against the Lady Rebels.

Emma Miller added nine points in the Johnson County victory.

McKenzie Littleton paced a balanced South attack with 10 points. Nicole Troutman had nine points, while Allie Jordan and Alex Harris each scored eight points.

Dobyns-Bennett 61, Tennessee High 35

BRISTOL — Olivia Doran hit four shots from 3-point range for a team-best 14 points in the Lady Indians’ romp over the Lady Vikings.

Caitlyn Wallace was right behind with 13 points, while Megan Ayers scored nine in the Dobyns-Bennett victory.

Kenzie Nickels had 15 points and six rebounds to lead Tennessee High. Kendall Cross was next on the scoring list with seven points, with Tori Ryan finishing with 11 rebounds and two blocks.

Providence Academy 43, Sullivan North 38

KINGSPORT —Callie Burchette went 7 for 8 from the free-throw line, scoring 13 points to lead the Lady Knights over the Lady Raiders. Burchette came within a hair of a double-double, grabbing nine rebounds.

Katie Cross came through with 10 points and seven steals. Mary McAllister finished with nine points and 13 rebounds.

North freshman Kierra Kotee scored 19 points and Sahara Bates added nine for the Raiders.

North Greene 51, Cloudland 40

ROAN MOUNTAIN — The Lady Huskies pulled away in the fourth quarter to hand the Lady Highlanders their first Watauga Valley Conference loss of the season.

Brooklyn Anderson netted 18 points to lead North Greene’s efforts. Breezy Savage finished with 13 points and Shelby Davenport was hot on her heels with 12 points.

Cloudland was paced by Kenzie Birchfield, who made a trio of 3-point shots to score nine points. Gracie Freeman and Mandy Benfield each scored eight points.

South Greene 77, Hampton 40

GREENEVILLE — The six-time state champion Lady Rebels outscored the Lady Bulldogs 31-6 in the second quarter to run away with the victory.

Kiley Collins had 26 points with 23 of them coming in the first half. Haley Kells was next up with 16 points and Addison Williams scored nine.

Hazen Brumitt was the lone Hampton player in double digits with 14 points. Sara Orr was the next highest scorer with six.
