With the 2019 season coming to a close, the Milligan College basketball teams are getting ready for the 2020 portion of their season — which is full of Appalachian Athletic Conference competition.

Women’s basketball looking for success in December

The Milligan women’s basketball team has had a slow start to its 2019-20 season but is looking to come out dominant in the month of December.

The Lady Buffs (2-8, 1-5 AAC) have had the lead in almost every game they’ve lost this season, but have been unable to hold it in the fourth quarter. Their first AAC game of the season against Bluefield went into overtime and their matchup against AAC foe Montreat was won by the Cavs by one point.

The Buffs secured their first conference win of the season against Brenau University on Saturday, Nov. 23, but fell to Union last Tuesday.

Milligan is being led by Emily Kiser, who is averaging 14.1 points per game, Kaely Gose with 72 rebounds and 17 assists, and Hannah Wyrick with 21 assists.

The Buffs have four games in December with three being against conference opponents. Their two games at home this week will be against AAC newcomer Kentucky Christian University on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and No. 18 Bryan College on Saturday at noon.

Men’s basketball faces tough competition

The men’s basketball team has been facing tough competition the past couple of weeks, with two of their most recent losses coming against nationally ranked teams. The Buffs fell to then-No. 17 Union College 85-75 despite having an early game lead.

Jacob Cawood was the leading scorer in that game with 23 points and reached his 1,000th career point during the game. Mike Featherston had a career high of 17 points against the Bulldogs.

The Buffs (3-5, 2-3 AAC) then competed in the NAIA Division II Showcase in Kingsport this past weekend and faced then-No. 21 Warner University and WVU Tech. Milligan fell to both teams, losing to Warner 67-58 and WVU Tech 81-62. Cawood and Bo Pless led the scoring against Warner with 11 points apiece. Nate Hastings was the team’s top scorer against WVU Tech with 13.

The Buffs are currently being led by Tyler Nichols, who is averaging 15.1 points per game, and Cawood, who is averaging 13.6 points. Desean Green and Featherston are leading the team in rebounds with 57 and Green is leading the team with 37 assists.

Milligan will face AAC newcomer Kentucky Christian University on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Wrapping up the winter sports

Swimming will compete again this upcoming weekend Dec. 7-8 in Lexington, Kentucky. Cycling will compete in the USA Cycling Collegiate Cyclocross National Championships Dec. 11-15.

Indoor track and field kick off its season Dec. 6-7 at the Bast Cregger Invitational. This will be Milligan’s lone event for the 2019 part of their season.
