LYNCHBURG, Va. — Erica Haynes-Overton reached the 1,000-point mark for her career, but it was an assist that might have been her biggest play of the night.

Haynes-Overton passed to Shynia Jackson, who made a basket with one second remaining, lifting the East Tennessee State women’s basketball team to a 63-62 victory over Liberty on Friday.

Haynes-Overton, who also made a steal when Liberty inbounded the ball, finished with 23 points. She needed four to become the 24th player in ETSU history to reach 1,000.

Jackson finished with 11 points while Micah Sheetz had 10.

The final basket capped a comeback that began with Liberty leading 48-38 entering the fourth quarter.

ETSU (1-1) went 18 of 24 from the free throw line a few nights after going 17 for 33 in a four-point loss to Tennessee. Haynes-Overton, a junior guard, was 7 for 7.

Liberty was led by Bridgette Rettstatt and Ria Gulley, who each had 14 points.

The Bucs return to action at High Point on Thursday.
