Bucs to play host to Green Bay in CIT

There will be no madness this March for the East Tennessee State basketball team. The Bucs already knew that.

They were still holding out hopes, however slim, to get into the National Invitation Tournament. No dice, once again.

Instead, ETSU accepted a bid to the Collegeinsider.com Postseason Tournament, commonly known as the CIT, late Sunday night.

The Bucs will play host to Green Bay on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Freedom Hall.

ETSU, which lost to Wofford in the Southern Conference tournament semifinals, will bring a 24-9 record into the game. Green Bay is 17-16 after losing to Wright State in the Horizon League semifinals.

It will be the second meeting between the two schools. The Bucs beat Green Bay 103-90 in a 6 a.m. home game in 2015, Steve Forbes’ second game as ETSU’s coach.

The CIT uses the old NIT format in which there is no set bracket. Pairings are made after the previous round is completed.

“We are very excited to be hosting a home game in the CIT,” Forbes said. “Our goal is to continue to play well and make a run at the CIT Championship. Our players and staff are thrilled to be playing another game inside Freedom Hall in front of the best fans in the SoCon.”

First- and second-round games are set for this week. Quarterfinals are March 27-31. Semifinals are April 2 and the final is April 4.

This will be the Bucs’ third time in the CIT. They made the semifinals in 2011, falling at home to Iona, and to the second round in 2014 before losing to Towson. It’s ETSU’s third postseason appearance in Forbes’ four seasons.

Northern Colorado won last year’s CIT.

Several first-round games in the CIT are named to honor former coaches. The ETSU-Green Bay game has been labeled the Hugh Durham Classic. The winner gets a trophy and advances.

Wofford was the only Southern Conference team to earn an NCAA bid Sunday. The SoCon champs got a No. 7 seed and will take on Seton Hall in the first round.

Furman and UNC Greensboro received bids to the NIT, giving the SoCon four teams in the postseason.

Tickets for Wednesday’s game can be purchased online at ETSUBucs.com or by calling the ETSU ticket office at (423) 439-3878. Ticket prices range from $12-$50.
