Cloudland falls to Cosby, 48-42

KINGSPORT — With 1:50 left to go in the game and up one point, the Cloudland girls basketball team looked to be on the verge of going to Thursday’s Region 1-A final.

That all changed within the span of less than 10 seconds.

Cosby’s Leia Groat made the go-ahead layup with 1:40 left on the clock and the Lady Eagles (26-5) outscored the Lady Highlanders down the stretch 7-0 to win going away, 48-42 on Monday night at Sullivan North.

“We got the lead by making the extra pass in the third quarter,” Cloudland head coach Mike Lunsford said. “We were afraid to make that extra pass and we missed some easy shots. We had a four point lead and we had a few roll out on us.”

Cloudland — after trailing for most of the game — hit a 3-pointer with eight seconds left by Heaven Caraway to give the Lady ’Landers a 33-32 lead going into the fourth.

However, powered by Braylon Megaha’s game-high 18 points and Groat’s 15, Cosby was able to fight back.

Senior Stacia Wilson finished with 12 to lead Cloudland (23-8).

The other two senior starters for Cloudland of Trinity Vines and Megan Lunsford finished with nine and eight points, respectively.

The door was left open for the Lady ’Landers down the final moments as Cosby did not do a good job of making free throws. Megaha made four out of seven and Lauren Ford missed the front end of a one-and-one that gave Cloudland an opportunity with 48 seconds to play.

However, much like the 7:12 before it, Cloudland had a tough time getting the shots to fall.

“This is probably one of my favorite groups that I’ve ever coached in anything,” Lunsford said. “These are great kids and they’ve worked hard. All around this is a super bunch of kids.”

The Lady Eagles move into the final on Thursday at 6 p.m. against North Greene at North Greene.

The Lady Huskies made quick work of Greenback in the first semifinal, winning 52-33 and outscoring the Lady Cherokees 23-13 in the second half. Breezy Savage led North Greene with 19 points.
