Milligan teams beaten in AAC basketball semifinals

KINGSPORT—Ultimately, Milligan College’s basketball teams couldn’t get things to go their way in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament semifinals.

After the Lady Buffs were eliminated 72-63 by Tennessee Wesleyan on Friday at the MeadowView Center, Milligan’s men fell victim to Montreat, 80-67.

Cassidy Anderson scored a career-high 19 points, including five 3-pointers, and senior Sarah Robinson coupled 17 points with eight rebounds for the 21st-ranked Milligan women (26-6), which will qualify for the NAIA national tournament should top-seeded Bryan defeat Tennessee Wesleyan in Saturday’s final. The Lady Buffs can also garner an at-large berth.

In a back-and-forth affair, Robinson converted a three-point play just inside the six-minute mark of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 56. The Lady Bulldogs, however, answered over the next two minutes with a 7-0 run that essentially decided the game.

Andi Lamb chipped in nine points for Milligan, which got 10 rebounds from Mackenzie Raizor.

Tennessee Wesleyan (22-8) was topped by Hunter Simpson 21-point, 11-rebound double-double. Jacobi Lynn added 15 to the scoring column.

BUFFS FELLED BY CAVALIERS

The first half proved to be Milligan’s undoing as the Cavaliers went to the break with a 43-22 lead.

From there, the Buffs (22-8) never knocked the deficit below 15 points until a last-minute bucket to cap all scoring.

Alonzo Mobley and Nicodemus Payne poured in 19 points apiece for Montreat (23-6), which shot 51.7 percent from the field (31-60). Payne went 9 of 13 from the field while Mobley was 5 of 7 from 3-point range.

Jeron Hemphill contributed 10 points, 11 rebounds and five steals to the victory. Austin Butler pitched in a dozen points.

The Buffs experienced a subpar shooting game, converting 25 of 69 field-goal attempts (36.2 percent) and 15 of 28 foul shots (53.6). They were only 2 of 25 from 3-point territory.

Aaron Levarity paced Milligan with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Adding double-digit scoring efforts were Desean Green (13), Tyler Nichols (12) and Jacob Cawood (11).

Nichols and Mike Featherston each accumulated five boards.
