University High defeats Providence for sixth straight win

University High continued to roll Monday night with a 72-49 win at Providence Academy for the Bucs’ sixth straight win.

Mason Broome cleaned up with 17 points to lead four Bucs in double figures. Kaleb Merdith accounted for 14 points and nine rebounds, followed by Jake Hubbard with 13 points. Colin Daniel matched his uniform number with 11 points.

The Bucs finished 29-of-53 (55 percent) from the field, including 10-of-24 from 3-point range.

Ben Jones had 17 points to lead the Knights, who made 15 of 41 field goals. Gideon Williams had 11 points, while Chris Miller ended with 10 points and six rebounds.

Greeneville 71, David Crockett 66

Mack Hensley’s 26-point effort wasn’t enough for the Pioneers to overcome the Greene Devils.

After a 38-38 halftime tie, Greeneville pulled it out at the end as Reid Satterfield had 16 points and Jaevon Gillespie netted 15. Other Greene Devils to hit double digits were Connor DeBusk with 12 points and Austin Loven with 11 points and eight rebounds.

Other leaders for David Crockett included Mason Britton with 10 points, and Donta Hackler and John Kollie with eight points apiece.

Sullivan East 68, Happy Valley 62

BLUFF CITY — With the game tied at 60, the Patriots pulled away in the final couple of minutes to down the Warriors.

Dayne Davis had 18 points to lead East. Adam Davison with 15 and Dustin Bartley with 12 and Trey Lowe with eight also helped the Patriots capture the Three Rivers Conference win.

Dylan Willis had a team-high 17 points for the Warriors, while Noah Stevens netted 15. James Harmon and Bryce Carter each scored eight for Happy Valley.

Johnson County 64, Sullivan South 52

MOUNTAIN CITY — Blake Atwood poured in 32 points and Austin Atwood notched his 300th career coaching win as the Longhorns stampeded to the Three Rivers Conference win.

Lucas Phillips contributed 16 points and Troy Reece added seven.

Ben Diamond shined for the Rebels with 15 points. Chase Bowery with 11 and Cole Layne with 10 added other double-digit efforts.

Cloudland 63, Unicoi County 59

ROAN MOUNTAIN — The Highlanders raced out to a 15-point, second-half lead and staved off a late challenge from the Blue Devils.

Hunter Shell knocked down four shots behind the 3-point arc in an 18-point effort for Cloudland. Robert Leeper scored 14 points and Josh Blair powered his way to seven.

Brock Thompson had a game-high 22 points for Unicoi County, while Caleb Adkins had nine and Brett Lingerfelt finished with eight.

South Greene 65, Unaka 52

GREENEVILLE — Ryan Johnson hit six 3-point goals to score 20 points in a losing effort for the Rangers. John “Boy” Ramsey finished with 15 points, while Isaac Hill and Will Sexton each scored six points.

Cedar View Christian 74, Tri-Cities Christian 62

KINGSPORT — Isaac Strickland had 27 points as the Seahawks flew to a 42-27 halftime lead and didn’t look back.

Drew Correll had 18 points, 13 rebounds and five assists to lead Tri-Cities, which got 15 points and 14 rebounds for Adam Pigeon.

GIRLS

University High 53, Providence Academy 29

Mauri Johnson scored 13 points and hauled in 17 rebounds to lead the Lady Bucs over the Lady Knights.

Courtney Henley finished with nine points, eight rebounds and three steals, while Callie Newberry had eight points and seven rebounds.

Christen Sholes had 16 points and Katie Cross had 11 to finish with 27 of Providence’s 29 points. 

Greeneville 68, David Crockett 45

Grace Hayes led four Lady Devils in double figures with 17 points in the win over the Lady Pioneers.

Leah Fillers finished with 16 points, while Alana Collins had 11 and Ashlyn White scored 10.

Mackenzie Baldwin led Crockett with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Emma Gouge ended with a dozen.

Sullivan East 75, Happy Valley 72

BLUFF CITY — Mattie Gouge scored nine points in overtime as the Lady Patriots snapped the Lady Warriors’ 10-game winning streak.

Gouge hit a 3-pointer to break a 66-all tie and Riley Nelson followed with a lay-up as East led the rest of the way. Hayley Grubb amassed a team-high 23 points, including a lay-up with five seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Nelson had 16 points, with Kayla Honaker and Gouge each contributing 12.

Shalyn Whitson had a game-high 27 points for Happy Valley, which led 16-3 at end of one quarter. Adrienne Henegar scored 24 and Bailey Ball added nine.

Sullivan South 51, Johnson County 40

MOUNTAIN CITY — Mollie Leslie’s 13-point effort led the way for the Lady Rebels road win over the Lady Longhorns.

Alex Harris hit a trio of treys in an 11-point performance and Carissa Comsa came through with 10 points.

Taylor Cox, also a star on the tennis court, netted 17 for Johnson County. Taylor Parsons scored 12.

Cloudland 63, Unicoi County 49

ROAN MOUNTAIN — Trinity Vines broke loose for 24 points to lead the Lady Highlanders over the Lady Devils.

Gracie Freeman scored nine as Cloudland raced away in the second half. Kenzie Birchfield and Mandy Benfield each scored seven.

Caroline Podvin torched the nets for 17 points for the Devils, while Chloe Powers ended with 10.
