Unicoi takes Three Rivers sweep of Happy Valley

ELIZABETHTON - The Three Rivers Conference basketball opener saw Unicoi County race out to a 63-48 road win at Happy Valley Friday.

The girls’ contest saw Unicoi County hold off Happy Valley 58-52.

The Blue Devils were able to capitalize early to lead 14-8 after a quarter partly by keeping the Warriors’ 6-foot-8 Bryce Carter at bay. Carter however ended up with 17 points.

“We did a good job of executing what we wanted to do defensively and trying to keep Bryson Carter under control to make someone else beat us,” Unicoi County head coach Michael Smith said. “We did a good job on the offensive end to keep that cushion,”

That cushion was maintained by a trio of double-digit scorers for the Blue Devils. Gavin Casey paced the winning side with 17 points which included six in the final quarter. Brock Thompson chipped in 15 points which included three makes behind the arc. Austin O’Dell scored all 14 of his points in the first three quarters.

“We’re struggling right now to make shots,” Happy Valley head coach Jeremy Maddox said. “You can’t win in this league and especially against Unicoi County when you get wide open looks that don’t go down. They’re going to make them on their end.”

The misses hindered the Warriors as Unicoi County extended the lead to 32-19 at halftime.

Noah Stevens helped pick up the slack for the Warriors. The junior knocked down five three pointers to finish with 17 points. Dylan Willis scored all nine of his points behind the three-point line.

The Blue Devils improved to 3-3 on the season while the Warriors went to 1-4.

Unicoi County enjoyed a double-digit lead, but the Lady Warriors trimmed the lead down the stretch. A lack of rebounds by the Lady Blue Devils gave Happy Valley extra chances as the game was as close as three points in the final moments.

Shalyn Whitson was part of the rebounding power of the Lady Warriors. Whitson’s second chances helped her to a game-best 22 points. The second half saw her pour in 14 of those points.

The Lady Blue Devils were paced by Chloe Powers. The senior knocked down a trio of three pointers en route to 14 points, but did not score in the final eight minutes. Kaylee Hendrickson and Allee Griffith both had 11 points each. Adrienne Henegar had a hot start with nine points in the opening quarter, but she would only add more more to her total the rest of the game.

The outcome sent the Lady Blue Devils to 5-1 with a 1-0 league mark. Happy Valley went to 3-3 and 0-1.
