East Tennessee State scored four runs in the fifth inning and Landon Knack reached double-digit strikeouts for the third time this season in the Bucs’ 9-3 non-conference baseball win over Georgia State on Saturday afternoon at Thomas Stadium.

Jake Madole blasted a three-run home run down the left-field line in the fifth-inning outburst. It followed David Beam’s RBI double as the Bucs took a 4-2 lead.

Knack (3-0), who came into the season with double-digit strikeouts, threw 12 strikeouts for the second straight weekend. He gave up a pair of early solo home runs, as part of three runs and four hits he yielded over seven innings.

ETSU improved to 7-2, while the Panthers fell to 5-4.

With a 4-3 lead entering the seventh inning, ETSU scored runs off a Georgia State fielding error, a balk and a passed ball.

In the eighth inning, Bucs pinch hitter J.L. Bland produced his first career hit with a two-run double down the left-field line. It remained the final score as ETSU reliever Nathanial Tate gave up just one hit and one walk over the final two innings.

Madole led the Bucs at the plate, going 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Cade Gilbert reached base twice on walks and scored twice.

Will Mize had a double and home run with two RBIs to lead the Panthers offensively. Seth Clark (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up six runs (four earned) over 6 1/3 innings.

It was the third straight series-opening win for ETSU. The teams play a doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon.
