Spurrier to throw out first pitch for JC Cards

Johnson City’s own Steve Spurrier will be the guest of honor at the Johnson City Cardinals’ game on Friday night.

The former Heisman Trophy winner and national championship football coach who grew up in Johnson City will throw out the first pitch when the Cards play host to the Bluefield Blue Jays.

The first 750 fans through the gate at TVA Credit Union Ballpark will receive a Steve Spurrier bobblehead.

Spurrier, a former quarterback who went into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1986, won the Heisman in 1966 and coached Florida to the national championship in 1996. He is the winningest coach at Florida and South Carolina.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. Going into Wednesday night’s action, the Cardinals were in first place in the Appalachian League’s West Division with a 22-17 record.
