Scoring in seven of their eight turns at the plate, the Twins piled up 20 hits and homered five times in a 16-6 thumping of Burlington in an Appalachian League contest at Northeast Community Credit Union Ballpark.
Working from the top of Elizabethton’s order, Spencer Steer batted 5 for 5 with a pair of doubles, three runs and a walk.
Albee Weiss accounted for three of the Twins’ eight extra-base hits and six of their 16 RBIs. He belted two home runs and a double in a 4-for-5, 2-run effort.
Janigson Villalobos, who batted 3 for 5, scored three times and drove in four runs, had two homers of his own — going deep in back-to-back innings (third, fourth).
Batting 3 for 4 with three runs, four RBIs and a base on balls, Seth Gray launched a second-inning grand slam to put the Twins up 7-0. Elizabethton led 10-0 before the Royals got Logan Porter’s two-run, fourth-inning round-tripper.
Burlington (10-13), which totaled eight hits, did the rest of its scoring in the ninth.
Max Smith contributed two hits and a pair of runs to the victory, which included three innings of shutout relief from Osiris German (2-0). Taking over for starter Andriu Marin after the fourth, German yielded just one hit and put up six strikeouts against no walks. Marin also registered six Ks.
Elizabethton (13-10) closed within a half game of first-place Johnson City in the West Division. The two teams begin a four-game series in Elizabethton on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
