MURFREESBORO — University High met its match in the state baseball tournament.

The Buccaneers jumped ahead of Loretto, but couldn’t keep up and were eliminated from the Class AA event with a 10-1 loss Wednesday in the losers’ bracket semifinal at Middle Tennessee Christian School.

UH finished the season with a record of 25-15.

“It was a combination of little things we didn’t do that we’ve done all year,” said Bucs’ head coach Josh Petty. “And overall, Loretto has a good bunch of players.”

UH was knocked into the losers’ bracket with Tuesday’s 10-2 loss to Trinity Christian.

UH led 1-0 after an inning of play. Brant Hare walked and Carter Pollock singled. That was followed by an RBI single from Esau Byrd to put the Bucs ahead.

Byrd finished the game with two hits, capping a nice finish to a season that was interrupted by a hand injury.

“He did a good job coming back,” said Petty. “He went 2 for 3, and that was a great way to end his senior season.”

Getting only one hit, Loretto struck for four second-inning runs against UH starter Michael Degennaro.

A walk and two hit batters loaded the bases. The first run scored on a wild pitch. Then Jacob James drove in a run with a single to make it 2-1.

An error on the next batter allowed two more runs to score.

In the third inning, Loretto got an RBI single from Jason Sharpton to make it 5-1 and James had another RBI hit for a 6-1 lead.

James finished with three hits for Loretto, which advanced to play Franklin Grace in the losers’ bracket final on Wednesday evening.

It was a shining season for the Buccaneers despite the finish.

“I told the kids after the game they can’t let the way the season ended take away from what they accomplished,” he said. “I think we gave our best effort.”
