There’s little sweeter than starting the district tournament with timely hitting, solid defense and shutout pitching — especially in an elimination game.

Science Hill’s baseball team had all three Friday night at TVA Credit Union Ballpark, defeating Volunteer 10-0 in the 1-AAA event.

“We had good approaches at the plate,” said Science Hill head coach Ryan Edwards. “We’ve been swinging the bats well the last few weeks. And I was proud of the way Andrew Miller pitched.”

Improving to 22-11 on the season, the Hilltoppers advanced to the double-elimination portion of the tournament, which will be played at Tennessee High. They will take on Daniel Boone (18-10) in winners’ bracket semifinals Saturday morning at 10:30.

“We will talk about the 5:30 in the morning workouts we did all January and February,” said Edwards. “They will be fine.”

Miller was the efficient starter. He needed only 32 pitches to breeze through four innings.

“I just stuck to what Coach Edwards told me to do,” said Miller. “He said to pound the strike zone and get after the other team.”

Miller received breathing room when Science Hill struck for five runs in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead.

“I was nervous the first two innings,” said Miller, who allowed one hit and struck out three with no walks.

Dustin Eatmon finished up with two shutout innings of relief.

Science Hill got it done from top to bottom. Landon Slemp, Matthew Levi and Alex Elmore each had two hits. Elmore and Jackson Hill each drove in a pair of runs. Slemp scored three runs.

Caleb Marmo homered over the right field fence, leading off the third inning and giving Science Hill a 2-0 advantage.
