UH baseball tops the list of state's most likely

Which area baseball, softball, soccer and tennis teams have the strongest legs to make the longest run into the postseason?

For something a little different, this is mix of all four team sports with an overall ranking based on the best chance to make reservations in The Boro.

The Spring Fling, where state champions will be crowed in five sports and numerous classifications, is scheduled for May 21-24 in Murfreesboro.

It all starts with conquering the district, which begins this week. Here is the top 10 list.

No. 1

University High baseball

The Buccaneers have enough pitching depth to navigate the sometimes tricky pitch-count waters of the region and sectional. And the lineup is capable of big innings and clutch hits.

No. 2

Daniel Boone softball

The Lady Trailblazers have won 40 games in 45 tries, and have played a tough schedule. The pitching is strong, the defense and superb, and the lineup is fearsome.

No. 3

Elizabethton baseball

Last year’s experience of reaching the state should help the Cyclones. Pitching depth, strong defense, and a dangerous lineup are part of the mix. Remember, this team defeated eventual state champion Greeneville in the region final last year.

No. 4

Unaka softball

The Lady Rangers made it last year, so they have the experience. And if Unaka can secure a home sectional game, it’s a winnable proposition.

No. 5

Science Hill boys tennis

If the Hilltoppers reach the sectional round for the second straight year, they would have a fighting chance in a potential match with Knox West.

No. 6

Dobyns-Bennett soccer

The Indians are ranked No. 4 in the state, but Knox Farragut (No. 2) and Knox Bearden (No. 3) are ahead of them. D-B might have to go through both of them to reach the state.

No. 7

Unicoi County softball

The Lady Blue Devils have handled area teams this season. And even with the recent 2-1 loss to potential region foe Greeneville, this is still a team capable of chasing The Boro dream.

No. 8

Dobyns-Bennett baseball

Getting out of the district will be tough enough, but the region level can be navigated. Then it’s a matter of avoiding Knox Farragut at the sectional level, especially on the road.

No. 9

University High soccer

It’s a tough road with defending state champ Gatlinburg-Pittman at the regional level, and then Sweetwater and Cumberland Gap potentially standing in the way for the sectional round.

No. 10

Science Hill softball

The Lady Hilltoppers have all of the elements needed to get down the road, and they have a regular season victory over Daniel Boone in hand.
