Science Hill pitchers shut down Elder

Cole Torbett and company were in shutdown mode Saturday for the Science Hill baseball team.

Torbett went 5 2/3 innings, throwing five strikeouts and scattering five hits to lead the Hilltoppers to a 2-0 win over Ohio powerhouse Cincinnati Elder at TVA Credit Union Ballpark.

With a runner on third base, Garrett Gleason came in to record the final out of the sixth inning. Andrew Miller closed out the seventh to earn the save.

“Cole Torbett gave us a great effort. He did a nice job throwing pitches for strikes,” Science Hill coach Ryan Edwards said. “Then, Garrett Gleason faced their three-hole hitter and he hit into a groundout. Miller did what he’s been doing all year. He’s going to come at you throwing strikes. He did that and got the save.”

With the dominant pitching performance and a defensive effort that included two double plays and twice holding runners at third base, the Hilltoppers (13-8) didn’t need a lot on the offensive end.

Jackson Hill and Ashton Motte gave them a pair of 2-for-3 performances. Hill singled to get on base in the second inning, and after an Elder error, Motte’s single advanced him to third. Alex Elmore followed with a sacrifice fly to center field for a 1-0 Science Hill lead.

Lead-off batter Caleb Marmo, who has committed to Wake Forest University, had a triple to start off the next inning. A line-drive single by Cade McCoy on the next at-bat provided the second run.

“Caleb got the big hit that he drove into the right-center gap,” Edwards said. “Then, Cade hit that line drive so hard the first baseman didn’t have a chance.”

Clayton Hodge suffered the loss for the Panthers, who played Morristown East earlier in the day.

Science Hill will face Dobyns-Bennett in a pair of back-to-back Big Seven Conference games early next week. The Hilltoppers will travel to Kingsport on Monday, while they will return to TVA Credit Union Ballpark on Tuesday.
