Bulldogs sweep 'Landers, record no-hitter

HAMPTON—Josh Owens and Dalton Rouse teamed to throw a no-hitter on Tuesday, anchoring an 8-0 victory in the second game of Hampton’s Watauga Valley Conference doubleheader versus Cloudland.

The Bulldogs also prevailed in the opener, winning 8-4.

In Game 2, the two Hampton pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts. Owens recorded six over five innings before Rouse, in his season pitching debut, tallied four en route to securing the final six outs.

Aside from a rough last inning, Highlanders pitcher Dillon Johnson turned in a solid six-inning performance. Allowing four earned runs and seven hits, he struck out six batters and walked only one.

Led by Rouse at 2 for 3, the Bulldogs piled up 10 hits.

The first game of the day saw Parker Henry bat 3 for 4, double, drive in a run and steal two bases for Hampton. Weston Street and Caleb Royston each accounted for two hits, with Street tacking on three RBIs.

Reaching base four times, Johnson went 3 for 4 and was hit by a pitch. Teammate Brayden Christman doubled in a 2-for-4 effort.

Daniel Boone 12, David Crockett 3

Led by Brody Goodman with a 3-for-4 performance, the Trailblazers racked up 16 hits against visiting David Crockett.

Goodman doubled and also had three runs on the day. Pounding a three-run homer, Hunter Adams joined Anthony Edwards (2 runs, 2 RBIs), Colby Backus (2 runs, 2 RBIs), Cade Elliott (double) and Ben Allen (double) in contributing two hits apiece.

Elliott struck out nine batters in 5 2/3 innings of victorious work from the mound.

Going 3 for 3 and scoring twice, the Pioneers’ Cade Larkins ripped a solo home run.

Johnson County 11, Happy Valley 0 (Game 1)

ELIZABETHTON—Jayden Joiner hurled a two-hitter for the Longhorns, notching nine strikeouts in the process.

Weston Throop and Reise Stout each had three hits, with Throop scoring four times and stealing three bases. Stacy Greer, Bradley Lavorsi and Ethan Icenhour added three hits apiece.

Johnson County 6, Happy Valley 5 (Game 2)

ELIZABETHTON—Breaking a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning. Austin Lewis’ two-out single scored Weston Throop.

Petie Pavusek finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Longhorns, who got a two-run double from Ethan Icenhour.

Doubling two times, Happy Valley’s Bart Wilson finished at 3 for 4 with four RBIs.

Sullivan East 11, FCA Flames 2

BLUFF CITY—Perry Casaday stuffed two doubles, two runs and two RBIs into a 2-for-3 output for the Patriots.

Dylan White (double, 2 runs), Ethan Terry (2 RBIs) and Seth Chafin added two hits apiece to the victory. Winning pitcher White yielded two runs in four innings, then Brantley Ellis tallied eight Ks in closing duty.

Alec Henry homered for the Flames.

BOYS SOCCER

University High 5, West Greene 1

The Bucs distributed their goals among five players and Tyler Barnes proved effective at minding the net in a conference win over the Buffaloes.

Walker Page, Pate Anglin, Bracken Burns and Malachi Heath converted for a 4-0 UH lead. Assisted by Page’s intentional header, Andrew Jarvis knocked in the final goal of the evening.

Heath and Moses Rathburn also had assists for UH (7-1, 3-0), which turned it on after leading just 1-0 at the half. The Bucs host David Crockett on Thursday.

SOFTBALL

Unicoi County 11, Sullivan Central 7

ERWIN—Five fifth-inning runs thrust the Lady Cougars into a 6-5 lead, but Unicoi answered with six in the home half of the inning.

Sam Chavez homered, scored three times and totaled four RBIs in a 2-for-2 effort. Carly Kinsler (double) and Ashtan Vance each contributed two RBIs while Halie Hawkins coupled three runs with two stolen bases.

The Lady Cougars’ Faith Campbell homered, doubled and tallied two RBIs in a 2-for-3, 2-run performance. Adding two hits apiece were Sydney Snapp (2 runs), Alexa Chandler (double, 2 RBIs) and Jasmine Sheffield.

University High 7, Hampton 4

HAMPTON—Amassing 13 strikeouts as she hurled a four-hitter (one earned run), Avery Kibelbek also doubled and drew a pair of walks.

Ryleigh Owens (2 RBIs) had two hits for UH, as did Cyndia Dobbins (triple) and Carlie Bragg. The Lady Bulldogs’ Maddie Setlock went 2 for 3 with a double.

David Crockett 6, Volunteer 2

With Kara Weems hurling a four-hitter and Ashlyn Dulaney knocking across three runs, David Crockett triumphed in Big Seven Conference play.

Surrendering just one earned run, Weems tallied four strikeouts against three walks. Dulaney batted 2 for 3 and Alyssa Suits had a pair of RBIs.

With Volunteer pitcher Sydney Allen (2 Ks, 1 BB) also proving effective, both teams managed only four hits. The Lady Falcons, however, committed six errors that equated to five unearned runs for Crockett.

Cloudland 3, Unaka 2

ROAN MOUNTAIN—Two batters after Kalen Fields socked a two-run double, Kendall Bare delivered an RBI single as the Lady Highlanders rallied from a 2-0 sixth-inning deficit to collect a big Watauga Valley Conference win.

The late uprising took pitcher Kenzie Birchfield from being a tough-luck loser to a complete-game winner. She hurled a two-hitter with three strikeouts, yielding no earned runs.

Lady Rangers pitcher Kailey Wilson totaled 10 strikeouts.

Sullivan East 7, Johnson County 4

BLUFF CITY—Cayden Bawgus won it with a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh.

Chelsea Sams and Kylee Wolf joined Bawgus, who finished 3 for 4 with two runs, in the home-run department for the Lady Patriots. Emma Timbs batted 2 for 3 and Sams, who also doubled, 2 for 4. Katelyne Loudy went the distance from the pitching circle.
