University High shuts down Sullivan North

University High pitcher Kaleb Meredith was efficient and effective against Sullivan North on Monday night.

The left-hander threw 68 pitches over seven innings, giving up four hits and striking out eight in the Bucs’ 5-1 win over the Golden Raiders in Watauga Valley Conference baseball action at Thomas Stadium.

In addition, the Bucs had eight hits of their own, coming up with the biggest ones with runners in scoring position.

“We came up with the timely hits which we hadn’t been doing,” University High coach Josh Petty said. “We’ve been getting runners on the base pads, but hadn’t come up with the big hits.”

Esau Byrd started it off with a RBI single to score Carter Pollock in the second inning.

North tied the game in the top of the third when Zach Scott doubled and Tyler DePriest followed with a RBI single.

University High pulled back ahead on Briley Townsend’s RBI single in the fourth and added a run in the fifth off Michael Degennaro’s sacrifice fly to score Meredith.

The final pair of runs came off Greer Barnett’s RBI single and Jacob Peeler racing home after a wild pitch. Byrd and Peeler each scored two runs for the Bucs.

Brayden Wilhoit suffered the loss for Sullivan North, giving up just two earned runs over six innings. Wilhoit also doubled at the plate.

Elizabethton 7, Johnson County 0

MOUNTAIN CITY — Evan Carter tossed a four-hitter with seven strikeouts in the Cyclones’ win over the Longhorns. Carter also had a two-run triple in the fifth and scored himself on Evan Perkins’ home run over left field on the next at-bat.

Carter scored twice, while Bryson Rollins also had a RBI.

Weston Throop went 3-for-3 and had a stolen base to lead Johnson County. Jayden Joiner suffered the loss, giving up six hits and five earned runs over 4 2/3 innings.

Unicoi County 3, Happy Valley 0

ELIZABETHTON — Peyton Whitson threw 13 strikeouts in a one-hit shutout for the Blue Devils against the Warriors.

He gave up just two walks and had a double at the plate.

Caleb Crain was 3-for-4 with a RBI and Ramon Avila was 2-for-2 with a RBI. LJ Mitchell had the other RBI, while Drew Keasling scored two runs.

Michael Harrah was tagged with the loss for Happy Valley.

Sullivan East 8, Sullivan Central 0

BLUFF CITY — Patriot pitchers Brantley Ellis and Alex Hawk combined on a one-hit shutout in the win over the Cougars.

Ellis struck out 11 over six innings and Hawk came in the final inning to strike out two more batters.

Perry Casaday was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Eli Milhorn went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, while Dylan White was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

Hunter Mullins was 2-for-3 and scored twice, while Dylan Bartley went 2-for-4.

Isaac Hood had the lone hit for Central.

North Greene 2, Hampton 0

BAILEYTON — Hampton pitchers Josh Owens and Morgan Lyons combined for eight strikeouts and gave up just two hits in a loss to the Huskies.

Owens, in his first appearance of the season coming off an injury, threw the first two innings before giving way to the freshman Lyons. Cayden Foulks got the win for North Greene, throwing 11 strikeouts in a complete game.

Five Bulldogs had hits — Parker Henry, Dalton Rouse, Landon Street, Caleb Royston and Owens.

Unaka 8, Cloudland 5

ELIZABETHTON — Nick Nunley was 3-for-3, while Bryson Street and Davy Ensor each had two hits and scored two runs to lead the Rangers over the Highlanders.

Daniel Shearl picked up the picked up the win and went 2-for-3 at the plate, while John Ramsey came in for the save.

Daniel Ensor added a hit and a sacrifice fly for the Unaka offense.

For Cloudland, Dillon Johnson was 2-for-4 with a double. Jay Isaacs also doubled, while Collin Morgan had a hit and a run.

SOFTBALL

Anderson County 8, Daniel Boone 7

KINGSPORT — Aundria Long singled on a 3-2 count in the bottom of the sixth to lift the Lady Mavericks over the Lady ’Blazers at Sunday’s Eastman Invitational tournament.

Down four runs in the fifth inning, a three-run home run by Nickolette Ferguson and singles by Jaycie Jenkins and Emma Robinette gave Boone the lead.

Jenkins had an RBI ground out in the first inning to first put Boone on the scoreboard. Ferguson took the loss, allowing seven runs on 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Megan Ackerman went 3-for-3 and Camryn Sarvis had two hits.

Daniel Boone 4 William Blount 0

KINGSPORT — Megan Ackerman threw a two-hit shutout and aided her cause with a RBI double in Boone’s win over the Lady Governors.

Jaycie Jenkins went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and a RBI. Emma Robinette added a RBI double.

Dobyns-Bennett 6, Sullivan East 4

KINGSPORT — Kassidy Miller hit a two-run, walk-off home run to lift the Lady Indians over the Lady Patriots in the non-conference game.

Lead-off Griffin Mullins went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, while Peyton Domby was 2-for-3. Morgan Riffle was in the circle for Dobyns-Bennett.

Chelsea Sams went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Sullivan East. Kylee Wolfe and Katelyn Loudy also finished 2-for-4.

Elizabethton 8, Happy Valley 6

Trailing 6-5 in the top of the seventh, Madisun Pritchard hit a three-run home run to lift the Lady Cyclones over the Lady Warriors.

Happy Valley didn’t go down without a fight with singles by Macy Puckett and Maddie Lingerfelt, but Elizabethton reliever Kalie Peters hung tough for the win. Pritchard threw the first 4 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs.

Maggie Johnson went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Autumn Hensley was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Kaylen Shell went 2-for-4.

The Lady Warriors were led by Olivia Absher, who went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and three runs scored. Kadie Havner, also homered. She went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Puckett was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

Sullivan South 20, Hampton 0

HAMPTON —Nicole Troutman was 3-for-3 with five RBIs to lead the Lady Rebels to a romp over the Lady Bulldogs.

McKenzie Wallen went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and tow RBIs, while Maddie Compton was 3-for-5 with four runs scored. Winning pitcher Tara Shivley aided her cause with three RBIs and two runs.

Macy Ellis was 3-for-5 with two runs, while Allison Chapman had two runs and two RBIs.

Sullivan South 14, Hampton 0

HAMPTON — Susie Chatman picked up her first varsity win in the second game of a doubleheader. She helped herself with three RBIs and two runs.

Lauren Richardson had two hits and scored two runs, while Chole Nelson and Emma Jones each finished with two RBIs and two runs.

North Greene 10, Cloudland 3

BAILEYTON — Kara Fields went 2-for-4 and scored a run in a losing effort for the Lady ’Landers. Jasmine Birchfield had a hit and scored a run, while Heaven Carraway scored Cloudland’s other run.
