Cedeno walk-off lifts Cards over Twins

Leandro Cedeno hit a walk-off, two-run home run in the seventh inning Thursday night to lift the Johnson City Cardinals to a 5-3 baseball win over their rival Elizabethton Twins at TVA Credit Union Ballpark.

A makeup from a Wednesday washout, the game was the first of a scheduled doubleheader. Game 2 was suspended in the top of the third inning with the score tied at 1. Plans are to conclude this game as part of a twin-bill in Elizabethton, with the date to be determined.

Johnson City improved to 18-21, still trailing the Appalachian League’s West Division-leading Twins (23-14) by six games.

Cedeno’s two-run shot over right field was the perfect bookend after the Cardinals’ first-round draft choice Nolan Gorman hit a two-run homer in the first inning.

The home run was Gorman’s ninth of the season, tying him with Kevin Woodall for the team lead. Cedeno is right behind them with his eighth home run.

After Gorman’s shot gave the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage, Elizabethton answered in the top of the second with Trevor Casanova’s own two-run shot over right field.

Johnson City pulled ahead again in the bottom of the fifth, when a Cedeno single scored Gorman.

Cedeno’s final numbers were 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Gorman was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Other offensive leaders for the Cardinals were lead-off man Jonatan Machado, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, and Donivan Williams, who was 2-for-3 at the plate.

Like they did earlier in the game, the Twins tied the game again in the sixth. DaShawn Keirsey Jr. and Trevor Larnach had back-to-back doubles to make it a 3-3 ballgame. Alex Robles went 2-for-3 to lead Elizabethton.

PITCHING NUMBERS

Johnson City starter Tommy Parsons struck out five and gave up six hits, no walks and three runs before Parker Kelly came in for the final inning to get three straight outs. Kelly improved to 4-1 on the season.

Tyler Palm struck out six, giving up four hits, three walks and two runs in four innings for the Twins. Blair Lasko suffered the loss after being tagged for five hits and three runs over 2 1/3 innings.
