BURLINGTON, N.C. — Frustrated by starting pitcher Yerelmy Garcia and Burlington’s near-flawless defense, Elizabethton dropped a 5-0 Appalachian League baseball decision on Thursday night.

The Twins managed just one hit off Garcia in his seven innings of work. They mustered two hits and a walk against Kelvin Gonzalez over the final two innings, but still couldn’t dent the scoreboard.

Garcia moved to 2-1 on the year, Gonzalez notched his first save and the Royals committed just one error — compared to Elizabethton’s five.

Although effective, Twins starter Andrew Gabezas (0-3) was charged with the loss. Putting in six innings, he yielded two runs (one earned), totaled five strikeouts and issued no walks.

Burlington exploited a pair of first-inning errors to take a 1-0 lead, scoring on an Eric Cole ground-out. Juan Carlos Negret led off the bottom of the second with a home run to left-center field.

From there, run production went silent till the eighth, when the Royals tacked on three runs. Matt Morales doubled to lead things off, Jose Marquez followed a single, then Cole deposited a two-run double into right field.

A throwing error led to Rhett Aplin’s sacrifice fly.

No player from either team had more than one hit. Cole totaled three RBIs as Burlington dodged a three-game sweep.
