GREENEVILLE — The Johnson City Cardinals baseball team ended a lengthy road stretch Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Park with a 9-5 loss to the Greeneville Reds.

The Cardinals drop below even par with the loss, at 5-6.

The Reds ended their losing streak at five games and improve to 4-7.

Dariel Gomez finished the day 2-for-3 for Johnson City with a solo home run and a walk.

Rylan Thomas was 2-for-3 as well for Greeneville, with a two-run blast to left field and three RBIs on the day.

The Cardinals left nine runners on base including leaving the bases loaded in the fifth inning.

Johnnie Schneider got the win on the mound for the Reds.

The Cards out-hit the Reds 11-10, but hit into three untimely double plays to end innings.

The Reds started out of the blocks in the first inning blazing with three straight batters reaching base and having the bases juiced before the Cards could record an out.

Hunter Oliver got the party started for Greeneville with a sacrifice fly that scored Brian Rey from third base.

Cash Case kept it going with a single that got by second baseman Donovan Williams and scored two on the play.

The inning seemed to be endless for JC, as Juan Martinez reached first on an error by the third baseman on a tricky play. Case scored from second on the play.

The top of the second inning saw Gomez obliterate a home run to the deepest part of Pioneer Park in center field at 400 feet, but the ball went about 415.

The Cards would only come away with one run in the frame and still trailed 4-1.

Johnson City had a big opportunity in the top of the fifth with the bases loaded and two outs, but could only come away with one run.

The game was back and forth through the middle innings as the Cards were able to score in the top of the seventh with a Luis Flores homer to deep left field and JC was able to draw within a pair of runs at 5-3.

The Reds countered with a Rylan Thomas homer to center that also scored Miguel Hernandez. Greeneville got runners on second and third later in the inning and was able to cash in the opportunity on a wild pitch and add one more run to get the lead up to 8-3.

The Redbirds cut into the lead again in the top of the eighth as they added a pair of unearned runs, with Kevin Woodall and Gomez scoring.

The Cards and Reds will play two more games in the series, but they will both be at TVA Credit Union Ballpark with the Monday game set to begin at 7 p.m.
